New Generation Colony Eggs

Why Colony?

Here at Hawkes Bay Eggs our primary concern is animal welfare, we have been spending a lot of time and money trying to ensure that our hen's physical and behavioural needs are met.

A long time before the 'colony' concept was hot on the press, we were looking for something better so we followed what was happening in Europe. As a result we decided that in order to provide our hen's a safe and hygienic environment where their physical and behavioural needs can be met we need to be 100% colony.

For over 4 years we have had the colony system installed.  Now 56% of our farm is colony and we are the first in New Zealand to have the colony system as its own uniquely branded product.

The New Generation Colony Eggs

In recent years we have been become more curious as to where our food is coming from. So what’s the story behind our New Generation colony eggs?

For us the decision to switch to our colony system was easy because:

•We wanted to have a better environment for our hens

•It was different than what everyone else was doing at the time

•We wanted to have a better environment for us to work in. Compared to the conventional system the colony system is extremely user friendly in many ways including:

- Significantly less mortalities than in the conventional system

- Cleaner environment

- Fewer injuries to birds

- Lower ammonia levels

If you are interested in a comprehensive overview of colony (enriched) and the differences between the standard colony system and all other egg production systems, the Egg Producers federation of New Zealand have a website that goes into detail. Egg Fact

The eggshell may have as many as 17,000 tiny pores over its surface. Through them, the egg can absorb flavours and odours

Did you know ...

A greenish ring around a hard-cooked (boiled) egg yolk is due to either overcooking or a high iron content in the cooking water. This can be avoided using proper cooking time and temperature, and by rapidly cooling the cooked egg in a bowl of ice-water for a few minutes.
